Can a stiffer shoe insole really relieve forefoot pain? Seems like I would want something soft. Does it work like a brace?

Arthur,
The way a stiff insole helps forefoot pain is by using what we call 'toe spring'. Toe spring, also called a forefoot rocker, is a design whereby the stiff insole is not flat, but rocks under the forefoot just like a rocking chair. Think of a pair of stiff clogs - same ideas. Or think of a stiff pair of men's wingtip shoes. Sitting on the floor, the toes on the wing tips will tip up.
The benefit of the forefoot rocker is that it takes load away from the forefoot. Works really well to decrease forefoot pain.
